Urgent recall over popular Woolies item

Written by on May 21, 2024

Australian beauty and makeup company MCoBeauty has issued an urgent recall of one of its most popular products.

Batch A23A07,A23A08, and A23A10 of the brand’s Lip Light Shine Gloss – which is sold at Woolies as well as Big W and Chemist Warehouse – “do not comply with the mandatory safety standards”, according to an alert sent out by Product Saftey Australia.

MCoBeauty has said the affected $20 products, which contain an LED light in the lid, along with a built-in mirror, “were sold without the warning information that is required for products containing button/coin batteries”.

“Please be assured that there is no fault to the actual product itself, only the warning label,” the brand said in a statement.

But Product Safety Australia said “the button/coin batteries are not adequately secured and are accessible to young children,” according to the recall.

It added: “There is a risk of choking or serious injury if young children gain access to the button/coin batteries and swallow or place them inside their body.”

The company has urged consumers to stop using the product immediately, keep it out of reach of young children and contact MCoBeauty to arrange the “appropriate remedy” for the product.

Consumers can return affected items directly to MCoBeauty or any retailers that have sold the batch, which were purchased between October 1 2023 and April 17 2024.

Consumers can find the batch number on the bottom of the product.

More Coverage

According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), consumer goods containing button/coin batteries “must meet secure battery requirements and are subject to compliance testing”.

“All consumer goods that contain a button/coin battery must be secure (and) must not release the batteries during reasonably foreseeable use or misuse of the product,” the ACCC outlines.

“This is mandatory whether or not the battery is intended to be user-replaceable.”
