A horror car crash in St Mary’s has claimed the life of a Sudanese war hero who fought to defend the land of his people and transformed the lives of many others, especially his family.
Lual Awan Lueth, 49, died after police spotted a dark-grey Holden Insignia accelerate towards the Great Western Highway from Mamre Road in St Mary’s about 4am on Tuesday.
When police found the sedan it had crashed into Mr Leuth’s silver Toyota Corolla hatchback, he died at the scene.
The driver of the sedan had fled on foot and was later found in the backyard of a resident’s property on Chapel Street, where he was attempting to steal clothes.
He was arrested a short time later, and was taken to Nepean Hospital under police guard for mandatory testing.
It’s understood the offender is “well known” to police.
Nyarweng Community Australia president Gabriel Thon Deng said it was with heavy hearts and deep sorrow they announced the tragic loss of their beloved brother in a devastating accident.
He said Mr Leuth’s passing was a painful blow to their community, and there were no words to express the shock and grief felt by all who knew him.
“Lual was a true hero,” he said.
“He was a hardworking man with many skills, admired by those around him.
“As we mourn this tremendous loss, we extend our deepest condolences to the immediate family.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with them, and we pray for Lual’s soul to rest in eternal peace until we meet again. Let us never forget his legacy.”
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday morning, NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Gavin Wood described the scene as a “tragedy beyond belief”.
“An innocent 49-year-old man … doesn’t get to go to work; he doesn’t get to go home,” he said.
“To that poor man and his family and friends, their life has changed in an instant.”
Anyone with dashcam footage, CCTV vision or information about the incident is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The investigation is subject to an independent review.
