Written by on July 6, 2024

Two homes have been destroyed and a man left with serious burns after a fire ripped through a suburb in Brisbane’s inner north on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the blaze that was affecting a multiple properties on Evelyn Street in Grange about 2.10pm.

Several Queensland Fire and Rescue crews worked tirelessly to defend homes and extinguish the blaze, with power lined down along the street.

All residents have been evacuated, the Queensland Fire Department said.

Strong winds carried flames down the street, which jumped across several homes, putting them at risk of destruction, the Courier Mail reported.

Homeowners were visibly distraught as they watched flames consume their homes as fire crews tried to defend other properties.

Resident Matthew Love told the Courier Mail that “his wife had seen several rags and a car on fire at the bottom of the house where the fire is believed to have started.”

“He (the owner) was still trying to put it out. He got pretty bad burns on his legs and everything,” Mr Love said.

“It just got carried away so quickly…the smoke was really intense straight away.”

Another neighbour named Estelle told the newspaper that she saw smoke growing while she was down the road from her house.

“We have two dogs and our neighbour smashed our window to get them out,” she said.

“We were at the shops and we came out and just stated running… it’s been really scary.”

Member for Stafford, Jimmy Sullivan took to social media to say his “thoughts were with residents”.

“There has been a serious fire incident in Evelyn St – the Grange – involving several homes,” he said.

“Please show great caution if a local resident … Obviously our thoughts are with those residents directly affected and their neighbours.”

Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed one person had significant burns to their legs, hands and face and another person had minor burns.

They were both transported to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

A third person suffered chest pain and was taken to Saint Andrew’s Hospital.

A large amount of smoke was affecting the area with nearby residents urged to close their windows and doors and keep respiratory medications close by if required.

Police evacuated the street and paramedics were on the scene.
