Rain, frost, sub zero: Winter weekend bites

Written by on June 22, 2024

Millions of Australians are likely to wake up to frost this weekend as the midwinter chill continues to lead to low temperatures.

“It’s going to be another cool and frosty weekend for many areas and little bit of rainfall,” said Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) meteorologist Angus Hines on Friday.

Much of the east coast could see frost on Saturday, he added.

“On Sunday, every state and territory is likely to see areas of frost but it will be widespread through Tasmania, Victoria, southern New South Wales, southern Queensland and even parts of the Northern Territory”.

It could be wet in Sydney and Perth, a few sprinkles in Brisbane but drier elsewhere. Adelaide and Melbourne could see the mercury fall to just 3C while Canberra is looking at sub zero early mornings.

A low pressure area in the Tasman Sea is bringing cool southerly winds up across eastern Australia which could deliver some rain to NSW, said Sky News Weather meteorologist Rob Sharpe.

“A fair bit is coming on Saturday in particular,” Mr Sharpe said.

“Into Sunday as that trough edges north with the fairly blustery cold weather it’ll target the NSW north coast as we see an easing trend for Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle through the back end of the weekend,” he said.

Anything from 3 to 30mm of moisture could fall on Sydney during Saturday which will have a 16C high.

The mercury should hit 17C on Sunday with an early morning low of 11C while 7mm of rain could fall.

The BOM has said that the heaviest rainfall for NSW will likely be in a thin band centred on the coast. Penrith, for instance in Sydney’s west may only see 10mm on Saturday, three times less rain than Bondi.

Predictably colder inland in Canberra with 13C or 14C highs on the weekend but down to 12C on Sunday. Sunday should see glorious winter blue skies for the capital.

Storms in the west

“A few showers are possible along the Queensland coast all the way from Brisbane up to somewhere around that North Tropical Coast area,” said Mr Hines.

A smattering of rain in Brisbane on Saturday should dissipate by Sunday. The city will see 20C or even 21C maximums and lows of 9C.

Townsville is looking at temperatures up to 27C.

Dry in Darwin with clear skies, 32C highs and 20C overnight.

“We’ve got a cold front arriving in Perth early on Saturday morning” said Mr Hines.

“It’s not a particularly powerful front, but it will be bringing the usual array of weather so that’s a spell of showers with a possible thunderstorm.

“Maybe a little bit of hail and some cool gusty winds pushing through in the morning but clearing through the second half of the day.”

Up to 15mm of rain could fall on Perth on Saturday but it’s likely to be concentrated first thing and connected the thunderstorms as the front rolls through. The afternoon and Sunday are looking dry with 19C highs and around 10C at dawn.

Cold mornings in Adelaide, Melbourne

Chilly in Adelaide with a low of 3C on Saturday and 5C on Sunday morning but the partly cloudy days should rise to 15C by 3pm.

Tops of 13-15C in Melbourne on the weekend. Saturday is likely to be cloudy with sunnier conditions on Sunday. A low of just 3C is due on Sunday morning.

No snow for Alpine areas where daytime temperatures will be well into the single digits but some flurries are due next week.

Partly cloudy in Hobart with highs of 13C this weekend and a 6C low on Sunday.
