Man and woman in suspected murder suicide in Brisbane are identified

Written by on June 3, 2024

A man shot dead his aunty while they were watching television with his mother before turning the gun on himself.

Martin Fowler, 44, pulled out a gun and fired four shots at his aunt Lois Witt, 77, while his mother Val, 88, watched on in horror.

Police were called to the house on Jambaroo Street in Albany Creek, Brisbane, at around 5.30pm on Sunday where they discovered Fowler’s and Ms Witt’s bodies.

Cops confirmed they had been called to the property multiple times in the week leading up to the suspected murder suicide.

Fowler’s mother was not injured in the shooting.

Family members spoke to journalists at 9News and said Fowler was a “gun nut” and a “loner” who had fallen out with the majority of his family.

One neighbour said: “He was always home, I don’t even know if he had a job or anything.”

Police said there was no DV orders in place but there had been “family arguments” in the past.

Queensland Police regional crime co-ordinator Craig Williams previously said the gun Fowler used to kill his aunty was registered.

“This is a tragic incident and we are assisting the family to the best of our ability,” he said.

Mr Williams confirmed that police had been called to the home a number of times in the last week by someone who lived there, and had dealt with the three people.

He would not comment on whether police should have confiscated the man’s guns on those occasions, but said there was no history of domestic violence between the man and his aunty or mother.

“I am unable to comment on the exact details because it is still under investigation but there had been an altercation which was our initial information,” he said.

“(The mother) was in the dwelling when this occurred and she is assisting us with our inquiries.

“We would ask that any witnesses who may have information in relation to this matter would come forward to police.”

Fowler’s mother is currently being cared for by family.
