Horror signs cropping up across Sydney

Written by on September 10, 2024

Anti-Semitic graffiti, some dripping in red paint, has been sprawled across Sydney suburbs, just weeks away from the anniversary of the October 7 attacks.

Graffiti appearing to support the terrorist organisation Hamas has cropped up across Bondi, Bronte and Tamarama, in Sydney’s east – an area home to one of the largest Jewish populations in Sydney – over the past week.

Photos shared on social media show ‘HAMAS’ written in red, green and black paint on buildings, bus stops, phone booths, signs and bins around the area.

NSW Police told news.com.au officers are currently investigating reports of malicious damage in the Bondi area.

The Australian Jewish Association said it had received dozens of reports of vandalism over the past several days.

Eleven incidents were reported by residents on Monday alone, according to The Daily Telegraph.

“Bondi, where many of Sydney’s Jews live, has been a particular target,” the Australian Jewish Association told news.com.au.

According to the latest census, about 16 per cent of residents in Waverley Council identify as Jewish.

The association condemned the incidents, which it said are intended to intimidate the Jewish community.

“The Australian Jewish community has been under siege since October 7,” it said.

“This concerted campaign of support for a terrorist group cannot be dismissed as juvenile vandalism.”

“The cumulative cost of the increasing vandalism is costing ratepayers a significant amount. We call on the authorities to start taking anti-Semitism seriously.”

Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,205 people. Over 40,000 people have died in retaliatory attacks in the Gaza Strip since, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.

A Waverley Council spokesperson told news.com.au it is removing all graffiti identified and has reported the matter to the police.
