Ex-Bachelor star’s Bali nightmare

Written by on July 4, 2024

A former Bachelor contestant has shared the horrific moment her partner was almost killed in a hit-and-run.

Kristen Czyszek and her partner, freediver Sam Hourigan, were holidaying together in Bali when he was hit by a man on a scooter who was driving on the wrong side of the road with no lights on.

Mr Hourigan was on the Padang Padang bridge in the Uluwatu region when he was hit, before another scooter ran over his body as he lay unconscious on the road.

He was rushed to hospital with a shattered spleen, broken ribs and life-threatening internal bleeding.

Mr Hourigan had to undergo life-saving surgery where his spleen had to be removed.

He is now recovering in intensive care, facing medical bills of upwards of $50,000.

The season seven Bachelor contestant took to Instagram where she asked for donations to a GoFundMe to help cover hospital costs.

“He hit Sam with so much force that the hospital has had to remove his spleen to save his life,” Ms Czyszek wrote.

“He suffered broken ribs, a shattered spleen, cuts all over his body and life-threatening internal bleeding.

“Sam is in ICU for the internal bleeding and broken ribs.”

She said the accident almost took her partner’s life, and despite having travel insurance, the nature of his accident wasn’t covered.

While Mr Hologram says he is lucky to be alive, he is devastated because he can no longer be a freediver as he doesn’t have a spleen.

“Nothing can prepare you for the amount of grief, shock, anger and sadness seeing the one you love fighting for their life. Everyone that knows him will say he is one of the most generous people with the biggest heart,” Ms Czyszek said.

Ms Czyszek launched a GoFundMe to help cover hospital bills which have already racked up to more than $50,000.

She asked her followers to “give generously”.

“Everyone that knows him will say he is the most generous person with the biggest heart,” she wrote.

“Please give generously. You know Sam aka Batman would in the same position.”

The GoFundMe has already raised more than $37,000 by 8pm Thursday.

“Thank you to all who have already donated and shown your incredible kindness and support. I am forever in debt to you,” she wrote.
