Boy, 14, charged over alleged uni stabbing

A teenage boy will remain on remand after being charged over the alleged stabbing of a university student which forced a Sydney campus into lockdown.

Emergency services were called to The University of Sydney following reports a 22-year-old man had allegedly been stabbed in the neck with a pair of scissors while on the Parramatta Rd campus in Camperdown about 8.35am on July 2.

Melvern Kurniawan, 22, was taken to Royal Alfred Hospital in a serious but stable condition and has since been discharged after recovering from his injuries.

According to Mr Kurniawan’s LinkedIn profile, the psychology graduate is currently completing his thesis while working at the Brain and Mind Centre as a student research assistant.

“I hope to use my experience and knowledge of the relationship between the brain, behaviour, and psychology to assist people across diverse settings,” Mr Kurniawan wrote on his profile.

A friend told The Daily Telegraph Mr Kurniawan as the “smartest guy we know” and that “he’s got like a brilliant mind”.

Following the alleged stabbing, NSW Police arrested a 14-year-old boy near Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

He has since been receiving health treatment.

It will be alleged he was wearing a camouflage outfit including a camouflage bucket style hat at the time of the stabbing.

On Tuesday, the NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team charged the teenager with one count of causing wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder, and three counts of damage property by fire/explosion.

Police will allege in court that the 14-year-old boy also deliberately set fire to a number of bins at two locations in Sydney’s Inner West on July 1.

It will be further alleged the stabbing was completely random, as the man and the boy did not know each other.

The boy appeared before children’s court on Tuesday and was formally refused bail.

He is set to appear again in court on October 1.
