Aussies warned to rug up as cold snap continues

Cold snaps are continuing across large parts of Australia, with frost causing headaches for farmers trying to protect their crops and livestock from the brunt of the winter weather.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Dean Narramore said there would be mixed weather conditions across Australia on Monday.

“We’ll see showers clear the New South Wales coast as high pressure brings dry, sunny weather to eastern Australia.

“Further west, a developing low pressure system in the Bite will bring showers and gusty winds to the south coast of WA and southern parts of SA.

“On Tuesday, we’ll see showers and gusty winds spread across much across Tasmania, Victoria and southern South Australia with heavy falls possible about the Mt Lofty Ranges,” he said.

“Snow will also develop about the alpine areas. Elsewhere will remain dry.”

Mr Narramore said welcome rain is forecast for parts of the country as the week progresses, except of most of NSW which will for the most part escape the showers.

“Showers, gusty winds and cooler conditions will continue across Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia on Wednesday, with snow above the alpine areas,” he said.

“Showers and patchy rain will also develop across northern and eastern Queensland, as a trough deepens there.

“While in WA, a large cold front and low will brings widespread rain and winds to the west coast.

“Thursday will see this widespread rain, isolated thunderstorms and strong winds spreads across much of WA as the front moves eastwards.

“Rain will also continue across eastern Queensland and will move into northern east NSW.

“In the southeast of the country, conditions will ease and a high pressure system moves in.”

Victoria

A severe frost warning remains in place in parts of the North East as temperatures dropped to -4 degrees on Monday morning.

Frosts with temperatures down to -2 degrees are also forecast for Monday morning in parts of the Northern Country, North Central, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts.

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and northerly winds are expected during Monday and Tuesday, with areas likely to be affected include parts of the North East, South West, Central and East Gippsland forecast districts.

Temperatures are forecast to remain in the low teens in Melbourne, with Monday topping 13 degrees and Tuesday expecting a high of 14 degrees.

Tuesday will also see a 60 per cent chance of rain for Melbourne of up to 2mm.

New South Wales

Sheep Graziers in the Snowy Mountains district are being warned that cold temperatures, rainfall and north-westerly winds are expected during Monday.

Areas likely to be affected include parts of the Snowy Mountains forecast district, which will bring a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to those conditions.

Meanwhile in Sydney, temperatures are forecast to reach a top of 18 degrees on Monday with only light winds.

It’ll be slightly warmer on Tuesday, with temperatures reaching 19 degrees in the state capital.

Queensland

The sunshine state continues to bask in some warm winter weather, with temperatures forecast to reach 22 degrees both on Monday and Tuesday in Brisbane.

There’s only a slight chance of showers for Tuesday.

South Australia

Rain is heading for Adelaide on both Monday and Tuesday with both days expected to see a 95 per cent of showers fall and up to 20mm recorded.

Temperatures will reach a top of 14 degrees and 13 degrees respectively.

Strong Wind Warning remain in place for Adelaide Metropolitan Waters, South Central Coast, Gulf St Vincent, Investigator Strait, Upper South East Coast and Lower South East Coast on Monday.

Western Australia

Perth is forecast to reach highs of 18 degrees on both Monday and Tuesday.

Strong wind warnings continue for the Bunbury Geographe Coast and Leeuwin Coast regions, as the trough develops offshore.

Tasmania

Patchy morning fog remains about Hobart on Monday morning, with tops of 13 degrees forecast for the day.

Drivers are being warned to be cautious on icy roads during Monday morning in parts of the Central North, North East, Central Plateau and Midlands forecast districts.
