Jury set to hear case against Greg Lynn

Written by on May 14, 2024

Prosecutors are expected to lay out their case against a double murder accused pilot in a high-profile trial on Tuesday.

Gregory Stuart Lynn will return before the Victorian Supreme Court as opening arguments from both crown and defence lawyers are delivered to the 15-person jury.

On Monday, the 57-year-old former Jetstar captain rose to his feet in court as he pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder related to the disappearance of Mr Hill, 74, and Ms Clay, 73.

Police allege the elderly pair were killed while camping at Bucks Camp in Victoria’s Wonnangatta Valley more than four years ago.

The pair were reported missing in late March 2020, sparking a massive search operation in the vast and remote Alpine region.

Mr Lynn was arrested and charged 20 months later in November 2021.

Selected by random ballot from a pool of 78 prospective jurors, eight men and seven women were chosen to sit on the jury for the estimated four to six week trial.

Providing a brief summary of the allegations, Justice Michael Croucher said it was alleged Mr Lynn had been camping at Bucks Camp at the same time.

“It will be alleged that Mr Lynn shot Ms Clay in the head and as a result killed her, and that Mr Lynn killed Mr Hill,” he said.

“These events are alleged to have occurred on March 20, 2020.”

Justice Croucher told jurors it was them alone who would decide if Mr Lynn was guilty or not guilty on both murder counts and alternative manslaughter charges.

“It’s not for the accused person to demonstrate his innocence, it’s for the prosecution to prove their allegation,” he said.

Scheduled to begin at 10.30am, crown prosecutor Daniel Porceddu is expected to set out the alleged case and the evidence he believes the jury will hear.

This will be followed by a response from Mr Lynn’s barrister, Dermot Dann KC, outlining what he believes are the issues in the prosecution case and how the jury should interpret the evidence.

The trial continues.
