Charges laid after alleged stabbing spree

Charges have been laid after a man allegedly slashed his partner with a box cutter before crashing his car in Sydney’s south.

Four people – including a police officer – were injured during an alleged stabbing spree on Sunday morning.

Police raced to a two-car crash on the Princes Highway at Engadine about 9am on Sunday after a white Jaguar and blue Mitsubishi Lancer collided.

A 58-year-old man from southwestern Sydney allegedly continued to slash at his 48-year-old partner inside the crashed vehicle as bystanders ran to her aid.

She was found with multiple wounds.

Police say the man also suffered self-inflicted wounds before he was tasered, taken into custody and transported to hospital in a critical condition.

During the man’s arrest, a police officer suffered a serious laceration to his wrist, which allegedly happened during the arrest.

The 58-year-old man has now been slapped with a string of charges, including cause wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder domestic violence related, wound person with intent to resist/prevent arrest, reckless wounding, and dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive manner dangerous.

He was also charged with fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, affray, hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.

A 67-year-old man suffered a laceration to his abdomen, while the 20-year-old female driver of the Lancer suffered a broken wrist.

Paramedics treated the five people involved at the scene before they were taken to St George and Liverpool Hospitals.

The 48-year-old woman and 67-year-old man remained at St George Hospital on Monday in stable conditions.

The male police officer and male passenger of the Lancer have now been released from hospital.

The 58-year-old man still remains at Liverpool Hospital under police guard in a stable condition.

He was refused bail and is set to front the Sutherland Local Court on Monday.

NSW Police Superintendent Donald Faulds earlier praised the community members who jumped in to assist following the crash.

“They’ve just turned up thinking it was a normal motor vehicle accident,” Superintendent Faulds said.

Cronulla Sharks chairman Steve Mace told the Daily Telegraph on Sunday he was on his way to a footy game when he saw a crash in front of him, jumping out of the car to help when he heard screaming.

Mr Mace alleged the man in the driver’s seat began slashing the woman when he attempted to open the door to help the woman.

“All of a sudden I saw him just slashing her,” Mr Mace told the Daily Telegraph.

“I was trying to drag her out of the car to stop the stabbing and he was swiping at us.”
