Man dies after stabbing in Sydney’s west

Written by on July 21, 2024

A man has been killed after he was attacked and stabbed by three masked men in a shocking daylight ambush on a suburban street.

The man, believed to be 37 years old, died in hospital despite undergoing emergency surgery on stab wounds to his abdomen following the attack in Guilford in western Sydney on Saturday afternoon.

Cumberland Police Area Command Superintendent Andrew Holland said officers believed the attack was the result of “wrong place, wrong time”.

He told the media on Sunday the man and an acquaintance had parked their car on Cardigan St in Guildford before they were allegedly jumped by three men.

“As they walk past what’s believed to be a blue or silver sedan, three males got out of that vehicle dressed all in black with face coverings and attacked the two males,” he said.

“Our witness has been able to distract one of those males by sighting with another witness in the street and gotten away.

“The two other males have severely beaten our victim.”

Superintendent Holland said the witness returned to his car before returning to find the victim “lying on the side of the street with severe stomach” injuries.

The witness drove the man to Westmead Hospital and has been co-operating with police who are still seeking to determine the “murder weapon”, he added.

Superintendent Holland said the victim was known to police but was not believed to have any links to organised crime or outlaw motorcycle gangs.

“We don’t know any links (to organised crime), but there are concerns about why they’ve been attacked in the middle of the day in the middle of the street,” he said.

He later added: “They (alleged offenders) had intent to go that location. They knew what they’re up to and our victim and witness were in the wrong places on time.”

In an earlier statement, police say they were called to Bangor Street in Guildford about 1.45pm on Saturday to multiple reports of an assault.

About half an hour later, police were called to Westmead Hospital after a man presented to the hospital with stab wounds in the abdomen.
